The story follows twins Sebastian and Cecelia as they grow up in an isolated farmhouse with their abusive father. Following the mysterious disappearance of their mother, they’re left with only each other to turn to as their callous father subjects the them to horrific punishments whenever they dare to stand up to him. When the two can bear it no longer things take a violent turn, with devastating consequences for all.
The second part of the story picks up 18 years later, with Cecelia now married with a teenage daughter, and desperate to keep an increasingly unstable Sebastian away from her family. As the lies and secrets from their past spill out, Cecelia finds there’s nothing Sebastian won’t do to bring them together again.
Dark, shocking and beautifully written, I absolutely loved Too Close. And, in Sebastian, Gayle Curtis has created a character that’s equal parts fascinating and terrifying, charismatic and unhinged.
