Toxic tells of five boys and a gal, all young and carefree, off on their holiday to Crete for a boozed up, mad four days away.

Hope, the only girl, is fighting her feelings for her ex, Logan, who is now going out with her friend Daisy. She isn’t sure it’s a good idea that he’s here with them but she feels so happy being in the sun with her friends as an honorary 'lad', with the free flowing alcohol, swimming pool a few steps away and the scorching sun. The lads are intent on getting drunk 24/7 and Hope joins them, increasingly upping her game and losing more inhibitions along the way.

On their last night they go on a booze cruise and she finds some female friends to bond with and manages to lose the boys after downing drink after drink. But the next morning she wakes up, alone, on a beach, dishevelled and scared. After two strangers attempt to help her, she has to ask herself are the lads she’s gone away with really her mates? How could they have just left her? And what’s happened to her? The party is now well and truly over.

I really liked this book. The above is only a tiny piece of the story. Although I’m way too old to be enjoying Young Adult books (I’m old enough to be these people’s mother!) I dived into this book from the start. In fact, as I’m only just back from my own (more sober!) holiday in Greece, I really wished I’d had this around the pool with me. The author totally captivated the scenery and atmosphere of a young person’s holiday with the fluorescent drinks, intoxicating heat and party lifestyle. I liked the language, which wasn’t offensive, and the way the characters all interacted with one another, including the jibes and banter.

The last two thirds of the book deal with what happens after the holiday and to the friendships. I really liked the character Hope, and the hapless boys that don’t really know how to handle the aftermath of the last drunken night, including her ex, Logan, who feels responsible. Everyone starts to question their friendships. Is there about to be a huge fallout?

It deals with some very real, important issues that I think a lot of people would relate to, young or older, and this is told through three different characters’ perspectives which make up the book.

I have never read this author before and would totally enjoy another book by her, I’m quite sure of that. I liked the style of writing which flows easily and makes you feel as if you are there. It’s a fantastic summer read, even if you are sitting in your back garden in the sun enjoying it. You will feel as though you are a million miles away on a sun drenched beach with this group having a blast! Highly recommended.
