The powerful cover illustration gives a sense of drama and doom. In contrast, the opening scene shows an almost poetic vulnerability in everyday life. The emotions are understated and the characters experience life without over-thinking. The style and uneasiness put me in mind of both Graham Greene's 'Brighton Rock' and 'They Shoot Horses, Don't They?' by Horace McCoy.

Tadzio Koelb somehow conveys a coiled tenseness which makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up!
