From the outset this looked like a winner for me......man dead, wife assumes his identity and begins new life with new family....even bringing up a child, deceiving everyone around them....it sounds dark and deep and SHOULD be the sort of thing I'd lap up.
BUT.....something's missing....it just doesn't do a thing for me....I can't engage with the characters, I feel strangely detached from the whole thing.
On the plus side the sense of place is very well drawn....this is a murky world and that oozes from the page....but the people in it didn't come to life for me and I just felt like I was plodding through just to make it to the end....I didn't actually care what happened I just wanted it to be over.
