Ellen is on a train, returning home from a visit to a specialist (it is intimated that she has had a troubling prognosis, possibly for the second time) and she has discovered that her ex-husband is expecting a child with his new partner (Ellen and Richard never had children together despite trying IVF etc)
A young woman with a baby sits opposite her on the train, and they strike up a conversation.
Ellen is unsure when aked to hold the baby, Mia, whilst her mum gets herself 'sorted' then makes a call.
Ellen is already feeling uneasy as she has noticed bruising on the young woman's arms so when some time passes and Kathryn hasn't returned from making her call; So when the train stops at the next station Ellen stands up from the table to see if she can spot her further down the carriage. It is at this point she glances out the window and sees Kathryn hurrying along the platform, away from the train and away from her baby.
Ellen doesn't know what to do.
She's already in shock after the previous events of her day and now this Looking in the rucksack of baby items that had been left behind, she finds a scribbled note addressed to her asking her to protect Mia, and to trust no one.
As she is already concerned for the young woman's safety due to spotting the bruises; she doesn't know whether to find the train guard or alert the police.
Then she notices a stranger sitting opposite seems to be watching them. As she leaves the train, she notices him following....
This is when she seems to make up her mind to take Mia home with her, to protect her just like Kathryn asked.
I'm eager to read on and find out more about Ellen and whether she manages to help Kathryn and Mia.
