Travelling on a train, Ellen has just seen a social media post that her ex-husband and his new wife are to have a baby. Something that she too has longed for. A young woman carrying a baby walks down the train and sits opposite Ellen. She introduces herself as Kathryn, chats but seems nervous and there are bruises on her arm. She gets up to make a phone call and asks if she can leave baby, Mia with Ellen ‘for a few minutes’. She doesn’t come back She then gets off the train as it pulls out of the station mouthing ‘sorry’ as she passes Ellen’s window. Bewildered, Helen searches the baby’s bag and finds a note saying ‘please look after Mia, don’t trust the police, don’t trust anyone’ Naturally, she takes the baby home! There is a suspicious looking thin man, a mention of fear in her own past and the statement that Ellen ‘is no stranger to guns’ to further whet the appetite. It’s a great hook and I really want to know what happens next
