I liked the way the author introduced Ellen's world to me in clear, concise language. I got a sense straight away of her marriage, her horrible struggle with infertility and the bleak future she imagines for herself while her ex moves on with his new family. I felt real compassion for her and then shared her consternation when the very thing she longs for is literally given to her by a total stranger! Finding a cryptic note to protect the baby from everyone, what a great start to a mystery. The story rattles along at pace and is cleverly pithy while describing the characters actions, thoughts and surroundings in great detail lending an air of realism to a bizarre occurrence. What would you do in that situation I wondered... I started trying to guess what might prompt a mother (if indeed she was Mia's mother) to give a stranger her baby without explanation and now I really need to know the answer!
