The author first introduces her readers to two lovers on Rome in 1977, a love that much be kept hidden although no reason is given. Readers are then introduced to Lottie who grew up in care having never known her parents but nonetheless went to university and is now an archivist. Lottie meets Tom when she's a bridesmaid at her friend's wedding and they fall in love and marry after a few months despite Lottie's friend Peter's misgivings. Tom works for the British Council in Rome and Lottie luckily finds a post as an archivist there. Lottie is confused why Tom is called out one night following a bombing which might have affected some colleagues but he doesn't really give her an explanation. When Lottie starts her new job she soon comes across material relating to Nina Lawrence, born 1940, died 1978, who had 'no known contacts, no known issue, no claimants'.
