If you think the cover of this book is beautiful, just wait until you read the gorgeous prose.

Rome connects the two women whose story this is, and the descriptions of the city are full of artistry, atmosphere and elegance. As a reader, you feel as if you're right beside Lottie as she takes in the floral extravagance of the infiorata, and you can perfectly imagine the breeze through the pews and the stained-glass windows as Nina goes to church to meet her contacts.

This book is part history, part ode to Rome, part mystery, part thriller. Webs of clues and deceptions weave through the pages like they do through the city and the characters' lives. It kept me guessing until the end, and I loved how the two timelines came together at the close. Each character had their own motivations and scars, and the revelations, as they came, were in turns beautiful and heartbreaking.

If you're interested in the importance of preserving history and appreciating nature, if you enjoy books that dwell on the nuances of the mind, and if you're curious enough to seek out the answers to the unsolved murder of a stranger, this one is for you.
