The cover and inside pages of this book are lovely, they immediately caught my eye and I think fitted very well with the setting of the book.

I was drawn in by the blurb and premise of this book and for the first few chapters couldn’t put it down. However, for some reason I’m not whether it was just me or the story, but something simply ran out of steam.

I don’t know anything about the Italian political situation, either past or present, so consequently found myself skimming over a lot of pages. The book clearly needs the political drama to add to the tension and to underpin the life and story of the characters.

However I loved the Italian backdrop, Elizabeth has a beautiful way of bringing the city and all its sites, sounds and smells to life. I liked her characters too, with all their quirks, flaws and baggage, it gave them a more realistic edge.

Whilst I felt like I plodded my way a bit through this book, I think that was all about timing and will definitely be revisiting this book.
