There are occasional glimpses of Rome, the eternal city, in this book, which are beautiful, indeed this is a well written book with evocative prose giving a super sense of place. Having said that it is unlikely I would have continued had I not won this book.

I was expecting more historical explanation and context, but this was often brushed over or not really explained in the detail I was craving.

Lotte has married Tom, she moves to Rome to take up the position of archivist where she has to look through the papers of Nina Lawrence who was murdered in the late 1970s and yet the mystery of her death remains unsolved. Did she do something to upset the omnipresent Catholic Church, or did she get mixed up with the wrong people. Oddly I was less concerned or pushed forward in the narrative by knowing who did it, and found myself more invested in Lottie ans her backstory, which sadly - for me - didn’t have a satisfactory conclusion.

I am certain that fans of Thrillers and Elizabeth Buchan will find this a treasure of a read, but it was a bit of a struggle for me personally.

I was kindly provided with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion, all opinions are my own.
