I was not sure as I started to read this book whether I would enjoy it. There was nothing wrong with the setting, always wanted to visit the beautiful city of Rome and this enhanced my wish to see it one day. I could visualise myself immersed in the sights of this city and sitting amongst the locals in a bar.

The characters were easy to like and empathise with. Lottie Archer who is new to the city where her English fiancé (later husband)lives and works, she finds her ideal job and successfully starts archiving. This is where her life entangles with another young Englishwoman Nina Lawrence, a murder victim from the late 1970’s. Nina was a successful landscape gardener but on her death very few people attended and despite it being a murder, it was never really investigated. By the police. Lottie’s investigations and discoveries put her in danger as she discovers secrets of Ninas past which some want to keep hidden.

The book is written in split narratives from Nina and her love affair with a young trainee priest and to Lottie and her new marriage. The split narratives helps the reader to engage with each woman separately and learn about them and why they are the way that they are. Nina story was cleverly written as it was clear there was still so much to find out about her and showed her pain at giving up on love to save herself from heartache. Lottie questioned how much she really knew about her husband as secrets began to unravel about him.

Really enjoyed this.
