This book was beautifully written, with a stunning front cover, one that captivates the eye, and exquisite descriptions of the city of Rome, alongside being able to imagine what it would be like to live there.

However, some times I felt disjointed with the characters, and didn't quite understand why Lottie was doing what she was doing, finding out about Nina Lawrence in such a way.

Set across Rome in two timelines with two different characters, the story follows Lottie Archer, an archivist, and Nina Lawrence, an English women who Lottie wants to understand why noone attended her funeral when she died. Add in some Italian Politics, a murder mystery, the troubles during world war two, life in Rome, guilt and betrayal.

It was a slow burner and one I kept putting down and coming back to, the problem was I wasn't urged to constantly pick it up and see where the characters were up to. I found Nina's story far more interesting and her doomed never to be romance with the priest, and if you're up for a slow burner, this is the one for you.
