There's no doubt that this is a beautifully written book - it's full of atmosphere, as it takes us on a journey through Rome, following the life of Nina in the late 70's and Lottie, who is trying to uncover Nina's murderer in the present day.
Nina was a woman with many many layers who embarks on a forbidden love affair with Leo, who is due to devote himself to the Catholic church.
As a newly wed, Lottie has only recently arrived in Rome and has got an job as an archivist, which leads her directly to the mystery surrounding Nina's death.
Nina's life, and death, is pieced together from the documents she left behind - despite many people trying to dissuade Lottie from her investigations.
However, if I'm honest, the characters just didn't draw me in. Strangely, despite learning a lot of facts about them, as we flitted between their stories, I didn't really feel like I "knew" them at all and subsequently wasn't invested in the truth being discovered.
