Two Women in Rome by Elizabeth Buchan is a complex novel. From the bright yellow cover I was lead to think it would be a joyful romantic novel.
However after the first couple of chapters the novel opened up into a more complex and demanding story.
The story revolves around Lottie an older newly wed who moves to Italy to live with her husband.
She starts a new job as an archivist and is drawn to investigating the murder of a british women in 1978 in Rome.
She discovers Nina, the victim, journal and papers and is intrigued to find out what happened.
The story is told in alternating chapters from Lottie investigating Nina's story and Nina's story told through journal entries. What follows is a complex mystery intertwined with political and religious intrigues.
The novel kept me entertained and though I did not always understand the complex political parts I enjoyed the story.
