We begin in 1977 with Nina, in bed with her lover - it’s an illicit affair and not too difficult to surmise what the main obstacle is! Enjoyed the insights on Italian art and continued to do so throughout the book
We then meet present day Lottie who, after a difficult childhood has married Tom, a man who clearly is not exactly who he says he is but whether it is still one of the good guys remains to be seen. She’s an archivist and comes across papers relating to Nina who apparently had no family and left a (possibly) very valuable painting. She seems not to have been mourned and there is a mystery about her death. As well as the insights on art, the book is also interesting for its depiction of the complexities of Italian politics then and now.
What is not interesting however is the story itself. You would have to be really, really slow not to work out pretty quickly roughly who everyone was and what was their role. A most unmysterious mystery but a book of some interest nevertheless
