From the first impression I was expecting to love this book but unfortunately that was not the case. Italy, art, history and a complicated love story. What's not to love I thought but despite it's setting and some intrigue around ancient and modern secrets, I found this book to be a difficult read. I was two thirds the way through the book before I could really say I was interested in turning the next page to find out what was going to happen and what Lottie would discover. Even at the end when everything became clear I felt so much more could have been made of the story and the characters.
Initially I was drawn to the cover of this book with it's images of Rome and horticulture but I don't think it reflects what the book is about or the fact that it spans post World War Two to more recent times. Working as an archivist and discovering the secrets of a post war gardener just don't seem to be in keeping with the style.
