I have a feeling that this book is not designed to be taken too seriously, but to provide some fun thrills. This is not my usual sort of read so I don't have much to compare it to, though my impression is that it is better written than some other best-selling erotic thrillers. The simple but fairly striking cover seems to be a nod to the setting of the underground art world, showing what looks like a ripped canvas.
