A very nice opening to the book, the first paragraph was beautifully written and really set the scene for the book. Its written in the 3rd person which is my preferred writing style and introduced characters such as Luca and Mona very well. I suspect the book would go into greater significance about the details in the first chapter such as the importance of this fish smoker used and descibed throughout the first chapter and I'm very intrigued to find out more!
