For me, this book did not work. It is not plot driven, the characters each get a chapter or two, things happen to them, but the reader gets little chance to either know the characters or care much about what happens to them. Events may be mentioned in further chapters, but the reader does not get to see the impact of this on the characters to whom this is central. A mother, for example, watches over her son, in a coma after he is the victim of an acid attack. It is mentioned in passing in a future chapter that he wakes up, but we never hear from the mother again. Unfortunately I also found the book did not work as a character study. The “voices” of the characters were unconvincing on occasion, and the reader does not spend enough time with the characters to become involved, which is what I most enjoy in fiction. The writing style is neat, you can tell the author has skill in writing short stories, for me personally I prefer a strong plot or believable characterisation.
