Set on the Greek Island of Rhodes, this book brilliantly recalls the diaries of a young 16 year old Jewish girl during WWII through her granddaughters.
The story starts with Naomi, the granddaughter of Bubba. Bubba has had a stroke, and Naomi is her primary carer while her husband is working the cruise ships and her sons are at University.
She ends up reading her grandmothers diaries from when she was 16 years old, and the German's occupying Rhodes during the war.
While reading the diaries, she realises her Bubba is so much more than she has ever let on, and this brings on a wave of emotions for them both.
As the book goes on, they reconnect with Naomis estranged sister for a huge historical milestone for the Jews of Rhodes.
The diaries of Bubba were very heartfelt, and very emotional.
I wanted to laugh, and cry, and now I want to read it all over again!
Not the usual kind of book I read so it did take me a while to get into it, but once I did I was hooked.
Would definitely recommend.
