The cover put me off, I'm not a fan of witches or "coming of age`" books - so I started with a prejudice. I was wrong! The heroine, Ivy, - named after the cleaner at the motorway services who found her when she was a new born baby - is young, brought up in care and foster homes, and learned martial arts to protect herself as she is small. But protect herself from what? Predatory men, of course, but what else? Who else?
She eventually, via the internet, has found a link to her mother on a small remote island off the west Wales coast, and getting sacked from her beloved job as a guide in a butterfly zoo, gives her the opportunity to go and find her mother, despite veiled warnings not to.
The story motors along powerfully like you are afloat on a powerful river, swept along despite yourself. Excellent writing. Recommended.
