Ivy is a teenager who was abandoned as a baby at a motorway service station. She has spent her entire life in care, staying in children's homes and with foster families. The only thing she has of her mother's is a butterfly locket with a scribbled unfinished note in it.
Ivy has spent years trying to track down her birth mother, with no success, until recently when she was contacted by somebody who thought she looked like a women who they met on holiday many years ago - this woman had left the island they were on with her baby and returned alone. The dates seem to match up, so Ivy decides to make contact with the woman.
Currently Ivy works at the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo, alongside a boy called Tom (the nephew of the Zoo manager). Circumstances lead to Ivy and Tom making the journey to Bardsey Island (off the coast of Wales), where Ivy suspects her mother resides. This book is the story of what happens as Ivy tries to make contact with her mother.
This is an enjoyable read, with a creepy atmospheric undertone and threads of Welsh mythology and Arthurian legend running through it.
