This book has a really good, strong start. Ivy, one of the two main characters, is well written and likeable, as is her colleague Tom. Their borderline sleazy boss (and Tom's uncle), not so much. Almost a caricature.
The story gets off to a terrific start with plenty of menace and peril to grab the reader as Ivy tries to track down the mother who abandoned her shortly after her birth, and I was really looking forward to reading the rest of the book. However, something sort of slipped after that as it became clear that this was a different slant on Merlin's mythology. The further I got with the book, the more I found it annoying rather than gripping and it was really quite difficult to get all the way through. Some parts of the narrative kind of dragged while other parts felt quite rushed through, with almost everything that Ivy needed to know about herself coming through a "feeling"or intuition.
The ending felt quite rushed and I suspect there may be a follow up planned for the loose ends
