I was really looking forward to this as I so enjoyed Rachel Burge's previous books. It had a really promising start and some strong literary features. Similarly to the style of The Twisted Tree and The Crooked Mask, the author uses a range of devices to portray a creepy sense of foreboding. I enjoyed the metaphor with the caterpillars transforming into butterflies which felt very apt for a Young Adults novel. I liked the idea of the Arthurian legends brought in but for me this could have been much more deeply explored, it felt like a very light touch approach to this. I enjoyed the book overall but felt like I was waiting a long time to get past the start and before I knew it, the book was finished in what felt a hurried fashion. The character developments and exposition of feelings was a little twee for me but I guess this is part and parcel of YA fiction and I appreciate I'm not the target audience here. Overall an enjoyable read but I preferred her other books.
