"Waking the Witch" by Rachel Burge is a magical story, which covers everything from romance, witchcraft, mythology and Arthurian legend. This is not my usual type of book, but I enjoyed it very much indeed.

Seventeen-year-old Ivy was abandoned in a motorway service station as a baby, and has spent her whole life in children's homes and foster care. She devotes time to finding her birth family, and is eventually rewarded when someone contacts her with details of her mother's whereabouts. Ivy writes to her mother, and receives a warning phone call from her telling her that she is in danger and must not visit. Shortly afterwards, Ivy experiences a very strange occurrence involving a visitor at the butterfly zoo where she works and this is where her adventure really begins. Together with Tom, her co-worker, she embarks on a journey to Bardsey Island in Wales, a trip full of mystery and intrigue where she learns about what lead her mother to abandon her all those years ago.

This is a beautifully-written page turner of a book. The strange happenings are very well described. It is eerie and quite scary in parts, with a bit of humour thrown in to lighten things up, and will appeal to readers who enjoy fantasy and mystery novels.
