Thanks to Readers first for sending me a copy of Waking the Witch by Rachel Burge in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

I seem to have been reading a few witch themed books recently, and was intrigued by the first look at Waking the Witch. For a YA book, this definitely delivers on the dark, magic and creep factor!

The story focuses on the protagonist Ivy, who was abandoned as a baby and has grown up in a series of homes and foster care. Ivy’s only wish is to find her mother and to discover why she was abandoned, leaving her to work her through life independently and without any toes that bind.

Ivy’s life is upended one day when whilst at work with her frenemy Tom, she receives a call from her mother warning her that her life is in danger and she should go anywhere but Aberaron, where her mother lives. Cue events kicking off, and Ivy making her way there with Tom’s aid.

The story is set in current day Wales and draws on welsh folklore to bring forth a truly gothic and macabre tale of Merlín and Morgan le Fay, that is truly brilliantly written. The storyline and plot are devised with such pace and precision that it’s impossible to find the seams.

There are a few tropes in the story, but these are used brilliantly to support and define Ivy’s growth as a character, her relationship with Tom and of course the supporting characters. If you enjoy folkloric tales, witchcraft, mystery and magic, then this is definitely the book for you.
