Waking the Witch by Rachel Burge is a wonderful mixture of young adult fantasy, romance and mythology. It's a hard book to place into one genre and describe but I really enjoyed it.
Ivy feels all alone in the world, brought up in care and by a range of foster carers since being abandoned by her mother as a young baby.
Now 17 Ivy works part time in a butterfly house and is busy searching for her real mother. One day she is part of a strange incident with a man attacking her who later seems unaware of his actions, shortly after she received a phone call from her mother warning her that she was in danger. Fired due to the incident, her and Tom a colleague set out to find her mother and discover what is happening.
They find themselves on a deserted island off the welsh coast where only her mother lives during winter. Her mother warning of demons and shadows and seemingly agitated to find her at the door.
What is Ivy, where does she belong and will she finally confess to Tom her true situation?
This novel was very intriguing and I liked the blend of mythology with current day romance and intrigue.
I really enjoyed reading this novel and I got drawn into Ivy's story and was rooting for happy ending. However I did feel the last section of the novel felt rushed and confusing. I would recommend this novel to anyone looking for a story that is unusual and full of fantasy.
