Her work is thoughtful, well-researched, funny, amusing, and approachable. I knew I was going to like this book by the end of the first chapter. Several times throughout the book, I found myself exclaiming "yeah!" in agreement. Her personal anecdotes were so relatable to my own journey, including some of the private struggles in her life that she had to face, that she already felt like a good friend while reading the book, through clouds of clove cigarette smoke, Portishead trip-hop beats, and early back-firing spellcasting experiments. Waking the Witch is a book with a message, a very important message - it's not a how-to book on being a witch, nor is it a grimoire of spells. It has also enabled me to be more precise with my own beliefs about what a witch is in general. I know it's a book I'll return to read again and again, and i hope to see more books from her in the future!
