The first thing I notice about this is that the publisher has put a couple of pages of plaudits at the front of the book from a varied range of authors. For me this is almost as much of a red flag as Reading Group notes at the end of the book. Never bodes well when they feel the need to tout how good the book is, or how "worthy" it is before you've even read a page.

The story itself seems to be off to a decent enough start, a little bit of background colour and then the First Impression tapers off before you really get to the meat of it all - Vincent King coming home after 30 years. To be honest, I'm not that sure I am interested enough to find out what happens next. It just didn't draw me in the way this genre is supposed to.

I have read Chris Whitaker before and the author does small town very well. Hopefully that will permeate through this book but at the moment I'm not really seeing it.
