A thriller that's all about the characters and not the crime.......

I'm really torn with this one - it's the second book I've read by the author and I still can't make up my mind whether I like it or not.
I love a crime thriller as they tend to be fast paced, page turners that grip you round the throat and throw in a curveball at the end to take your breath away.
"We Begin At The End" is a crime story, in fact a story of multiple crimes over several years, but I couldn't describe it as a thriller. If it's a breath-taking thrill of a read that you're after this isn't the one for you.
However, it is a beautiful character study - a warts and all examination of what it is to be human. How we can atone for our mistakes for an entire lifetime. How we can keep secrets from our loved ones. How we can do the right thing by our loved ones although it can cause us the greatest amount of pain. How circumstance can completely change us. How we are all damaged somehow.
It's quite slow and a book you have to concentrate on - if you try and skim read this one you'll miss a whole host of nuance along the way.
There's no doubt that this is a really powerful piece of work - I'm just not convinced it's for me.
