I am fully aware that I am very late to this party and I am kicking myself for not picking up this book sooner! When I saw it was available on Borrow Box I was very excited to start it. George Newbern does an incredible job of bring Duchess and Walk’s story to life as well as all the other characters. I would happily listen to this one all over again.

What I hadn’t expected was to fall in love with Duchess Radley. To say that girl was resilient would be an understatement. For someone of such a young age she was wise, strong willed but above all caring. She had an icy exterior, which you could understand given her history but it was obvious to everyone that underneath that stone shell was a child calling out to be loved. No matter what life threw at her Duchess kept on fighting and trying to find a better life or make best of the one she had. Her care for Robin and ultimate sacrifice had my blubbing like a baby as did her tender moments with Hal and her final confrontation with Vincent King.

Walk was another interesting character who had put his life on hold for so many years. He too was strong willed and very determined to help his friend, Vincent King. Walk’s story showed how deep friendship lies and I admired his will power. His side kick Martha was a lovely addition too.

Aside from our two main characters there are plenty more weaved into this story. Christopher Noble, Robin, Star, Vincent King, Cuddy and many more that play a vital role. Christopher Noble was one of my favourite secondary characters. He was a great friend for Duchess and brought out her softer side.

This is by no means a fast read. It’s a slow burner that builds and builds until those final revelations hit. Even when you think it’s over Chris Whitaker has more surprises up his sleeve that will shock readers but also leave them hopeful. This is a story about family, in all its shape and sizes, sacrifice and unconditional love. An outstanding book that deserves all the hype and praise it has received.
