Duchess Day Radley is stubborn, unlikeable, foul-mouthed and makes some truly appalling decisions in her life. She has also just 13, loves her brother and her mother and will do anything to protect them. Right from the start I so wanted everything to come out right for them but imagined that it probably wouldn’t
30 years ago Vincent King killed Sissy Radley and is now, at the end of his sentence, returning to the town where he was born. I wanted it to come right for him too as we soon find out that the killing was not quite what we may have thought, but it was one for which he could never forgive himself.
I read this book in one sitting as the story carried me along relentlessly painting a compelling portrait of small town America, not to mention an appalling indictment of the American penal system and its attitude towards children. (If I'd known more about the system a later revelation might have come as less of a surprise) As the book unfolds we come across example upon example of how events in childhood and decisions made on the spur of the moment will devastate a child for the rest of their life. All of the main characters' lives, including are affected by the events of that one night, even the ones not yet born.
I thought it got quite bogged down a bit in the middle with investigating who did what in respect of a second crime. But in fact this was of less interest than the desire to find out how those children would survive and whether Vincent would find any kind of peace or redemption. Well I’m not going to spoil ...you’ll have to read it for yourself..it will be worth your time
