Thirty years ago Vincent King became killer, now he’s being released back in to his small home town but not everyone is pleased to see him. Like Star Radley, his ex-girlfriend and sister of the girl he killed.
We follow the modern day events as they unfold through thirteen year old Duchess Day Radley, Star’s daughter whose actions set off a chain of events that have increasingly tragic consequences. We also follow police chief Walker, King’s childhood best friend who has spent the best part of his life keeping an eye out on the Radleys.
The plot unfolds slowly, almost painfully, making it completely different to other thrillers I would normally read. Instead creating a richly atmospheric narrative, driven by its characters. This is an achingly beautiful and heartbreaking book. I think if you liked Jon McGregor’s ‘Reservoir 13’ you’ll really like this too.
