I'm not sure that what I will write here will convey how much I adored this book. The writing allows us to immerse ourselves in the American town of Cape Haven. It's so brilliantly written that you can have a real sense of the community and characters. And, boy what a cast of characters We Begin At The End has.

Firstly, I must talk of Duchess. She is the thirteen year old that has had to grow up way beyond her years. Life may have dealt her a terrible hand, but, Duchess is strong. Duchess is protective. Duchess is an outlaw, and outlaws survive. And, you can't help but hold Duchess in your heart. I could envisage her so well, and this drew me into her life and fell in love with this down on her luck girl.

The bond she has with her younger brother Robin is charming. As the story develops, we are truly invested in their tale and only want the best for these siblings. It's heartbreaking to read what they have to go through, at each scene I just wanted to reach into the pages and give them both a hug. Duchess, she puts up a wall and a brave face. But, her relationships with the other characters chip away at her exterior and we get to see beneath the tough girl image. And, this is why you will fall for Duchess.

Despite the misgivings of Star, her mother. and the fractured relationship that Duchess has with her. Duchess, is more the adult figure in the family structure. But, we see that Star and Duchess are cut from the same cloth. They both have that fierce need to protect, they may deal with matters differently. But, their end goals are the same.

I can't talk about We Begin At The End without mentioning Walk. He is as Duchess calls him, her only constant in life. Being the local copper Walk knows everyone in the town well. But, his loyalties to his old friends Star and Vincent King run deep. I loved the way Walt brought together the whole tale, spanning the years and linking the characters to form the narrative. His devotion towards the siblings, and of his friends is a wonderful spectacle to behold. Walk is also dealing with his own battles, but he doesn't let this get in the way of finding out the truth.

We Begin At The End is a truly inspirational tale of the power that love and family has over us. And, the lengths that a person will go to protect their own. This story truly broke me, I was in tears as the each part developed. Even now after finishing the book, I can't let go of the characters that I feel so invested in.
