The story is told from the view of 2 different characters. A policeman called Walk and a girl called Duchess who is the daughter of a school friend -Star. The novel starts with Walk finding the body of the sister of Star 30 years ago. One of his best friends Vincent is sent to prison for the killing. The novel takes on the story from Vincent getting out of prison and returning to town. Star is a troubled character and her daughter is raising her little brother herself with help from Walk. Duchess sees herself as an outlaw tasked with protecting her family.
In order to do this she commits a crime and angers her mothers boyfriend who vows revenge. Star is then found dead with Vincent arrested for the crime. Duchess and her little brother go to live with their grandad and Walk vows to clear Vincent's name. Who actually killed Star and why? Will Duchess and Robin live safely?
This novel kept me guessing throughtout. I was drawn to the characters and wanted them both to succeed with their tasks. It was well written and a good story. I look forward to reading other books by the same author.
