So sad I’ve finished it

This is a book to savour. Even though I wanted to know what would happen, I also wanted to read it slowly so that it wouldn’t be finished too soon. Perhaps that’s why one of the many excellent reviews from Chris Whittaker’s fellow authors says that they read the book twice!

I loved the characters in this book - Duchess, the thirteen year old feisty heroine; Walk, the police chief trying to hide his degenerative disease in order to keep his job; Hal, Duchesses’ grandfather.

This is a story that spans thirty years and every human emotion. The style took a bit of getting used to with some awkward, disjointed sentences and American dialect (how does a young author and part time librarian living in the UK manage to write like this?)
Duchess’ dialogue reflects her hard upbringing but the reader appreciates her directness and wit.

I loved it and now plan to read Chris Whittaker’s two previous books.
