This is a massive improvement on Tall Oaks by the same author. It's sparsely written - a style I love because it allows your imagination to fill in the blanks - I don't like everything being explained and written out for me.

It's a bleak story but there are some beautifully uplifting passages (anything involving Hal for me)

My one criticism was that in trying to throw in some red herrings to throw readers off the scent of what really happened the story has been over-egged a little - some are superfluous and don't add anything to the story other than upping the word count.

That being said I loved this book - a real slow paced slow-burner and I love that that is maintained throughout the book - it doesn't just launch into a face paced action thing - it has the confidence in its writing to stand by it and is a wonderful book for it.
