This book is stunning! It's surely a prize-winner. The scope is huge and the emotions intense. The writing is spell-binding. There is poetry in its love of small town America and of the rural vastness. I was stunned to find Chris Whitaker lives in England because this novel is American to the core.

Each of the characters has their own path to tread and some degree of self-knowledge. They have tragedy and triumph, grubby secrets and tragic ones, desires and noble aspirations. There is greed and hatred, fierce love and petty wounding, lifelong friendship and long-seated grievances. There are wise people and stupid ones, none a cliche.

I will recommend this novel to all my book-loving friends. What a treat! I'm recovering now from the wild set of emotions it dragged me through and, able to think more clearly, I really do expect this to become a modern classic.
