We start the story when perfectionist Helen, stepmother of 2 young girls and wife to successful businessman Sam leaves the girls uncollected at school.

To the outsider Helen had it all. A lovely house, a perfect image and a ready made family. Why has she left? She takes no credit cards, ID or her trusty Filofax with her.

Delving further into the story we realise that posted image of her family isn't so shiny...

What I loved about this story as it unravels is that neither Helen or Sam are perfect at all. In fact they have deep flaws. Yet still this story was incredibly compelling.

Sam I grew to dislike more and more as the story went along, and whilst I felt for Helen and understood her reasons for leaving, the ones that suffered most were the 2 young girls left in a wake of grief and uncertainty.

Neither Sam nor Helen thought of them first. They became less of a priority and as such they suffered. My heart broke for them.

This was an excellently written book, one I would most certainly recommend.
