Although I'm assuming this can be read as a standalone, I imagine I'd connect with it more if I read from the beginning of the series. At this time, it doesn't seem quite as funny as I've heard this series is, but I guess jumping in midway through a series just makes the mum seem more whingy than funny. If I'd been with her the whole way through, I'd see the moaning in a different light I think.
