Wink is the fictional story of a young boy's treatment for eye cancer however it is based on the real experience of the author, Rob Harrell, who is more well-known for writing comic strips. In Wink the author uses his marvellous humour to write about this frightening and confusing time for a young boy. Wink starts with Ross describing being given the diagnosis and moving on to a description of the radiotherapy. This is a very brave book as being diagnosed with cancer and undergoing treatment is an extremely upsetting and worrying time for an adult and must be even more so for a child. A books like Wink is such a blessing for any youngster with cancer who can read it and know they are not alone in their experiences. Adults should read this book too and gain a better understanding of the worries and thoughts a child with cancer might have and be better able to support them.
