I found Wink to be a fun middle-grade book whilst dealing with a very serious subject. The main character Ross is going through cancer treatment, mirroring the author’s own experience, throughout this novel, opening with his first radiation session.

Within the book are some cartoon strips and illustrations. The cartoons are used to show how Ross is handling different aspects of his school, illness and treatment. These additions will help readers to understand the serious subject; they are funny cartoons reflecting an important topic.

Ross is generally an upbeat kid, but he has his moments of pain, hurt and anger and he allows himself to feel these, he is also allowed to show his emotions by the adult characters, which I think is important. It shows younger readers that you can show your emotions in upsetting situations; you don’t have to hide your pain.

I would recommend this middle grade book as I believe it could help younger readers understand this situation a little. Also it’s just a good story.
