Ross’ story is a beautiful blend of serious and funny. As someone who has experience of knowing a young person with this sort of diagnosis I LOVED the fact that cancer was only one part of the narrative. Yes the protagonist has cancer, but they also deal with many normal teenage problems as well. This helps create a new YA novel that is sure to become a classic to both teens and adults alike.
I can easily see this book appearing on secondary school reading lists very soon in a range of diverse subjects from English to PSHE and beyond. It tackles sensitive issues like dealing with the illnesses of loved ones, wanting to be normal and fit in, and dealing with change in a thought provoking, sensitive manner.
