What makes this book different to anything I’ve ever read - is it’s a fun middle grade book about a not so fun topic - a kid with a (potentially cancerous?) tumour in his eye. It’s written from the boy’s - Ross’s perspective He comes across as a regular nice kid, with many issues all kids will relate to - friend issues, school stuff & step-parent stuff but unlike most other kids he’s also dealing with a quite drastic medical condition that requires daily laser treatments.
In the first few pages you meet Frank, a really likeable surgeon. He has a fantastic sense of playful humour & he keeps the mood light from the off. Likely for Ross’s sake - but he also keeps the dialogue from turning too dark.

There are lots of have-drawn illustrations and even comic strips interspersed with the text - keeping the tone of the book playful and light and give you an insight into Ross’s inner thoughts and feelings.

So far I loved Wink, and would love to read the rest of the story to find out what happens to Joe and how his life is impacted with his future medical procedures. I’m already rooting for him.
