So this is marketed as a YA novel - and is definitely in the same vein as "Wonder" - ie school kid faces extreme adversity and comes out the other side etc etc. However, just as "Wonder" has universal appeal I think you could say the same about "Wink".
Ross is in the 7th grade and develops a rare eye cancer. In the wake of his diagnosis, he's been ghosted by one of his closest friends (Isaac) and the other, Abby, is due to move away as her Dad has changed jobs.
Over a prolonged period of treatment Ross discovers a passion for music, thanks to the hospital technician, and that some of the kids around him are not necessarily as they seem.
The story is interspersed with his "Batpig" cartoons and is an uplifting and fun read, despite the serious nature of the subject.
The author has drawn on his own experiences with the same disease and this allows for a real insight into the condition and an authenticity when describing the emotions that go hand in hand with such a life changer!
