'With The Fire On High' marks Elizabeth Acevedo's debut outside of her verse-style and yet, her clear skill is still plain to see. The voice of her narrator, Emoni, is present right from the very first word, blending humour, heart and intrigue in what is supposed to be a very ordinary beginning of a day. I love the inclusion of recipes at the beginning of each section and how Acevedo always brings the conversation back to food (and how transformative food can be). I can't wait to read more.
