I love Elizabeth Acevedo's style of writing, you immediately feel like you know Emoni like she is one of your friends you have had for years. The chapters that go into the back story flow nicely cut back into the main story really well. The language doesnt feel fake or forced, it feels natural and makes you feel at home almost in the story.
