Emoni is a 17 year old Puerto Rican girl living in Philadelphia with her 'Buela (grandmother)...she's also a mother to a 2 year old baby named Emma, who she endearingly refers to as Babygirl.

Emoni's big passion since being not much older than her daughter, is cooking. She's not just good at it, she's gifted, her aunt believes it's magic.

I REALLY want to read this book, I adore Emoni already and I want to find out if she achieves her dream of becoming a chef, despite the obstacles life has thrown at her.

This book obviously deals with some serious topics such as teenage pregnancy and racial prejudice; as a Puerto Rican living in such a white centric country. What hit me hard is Emoni's decision to give her baby a 'white' sounding name in order to give her better choices in life, because of the discrimination she herself has experienced. I think this book will really bring out the compassionate side of it's readers. Elizabeth Acevedo has such a gorgeous, poetic way of telling a story and I love the illustrations at the start of each chapter. I would love to read more.
