I want to begin by saying that I was sent this book for free from Readers First, but all thoughts are my own. I had heard so much about this book and it had developed so much hype that when I saw this on Readers First, I knew I needed it. I also went into this kinda blind to not get overhyped about this. The book is about young Emoni, a 17-year-old mother of a toddler who is about to graduate high-school, but she’s not too sure what to do with her life. All she knows is that she adores her daughter Emma, and she adores cooking… and is very good at it too! This book is written from a first-person perspective with very short chapters, which made this feel like a very quick read despite being nearly 400 pages. The writing style is very casual and chatty which I did actually enjoy, and some chapters give more of an insight into her past and how she got to where she is today. Both Emoni, her grandmother and her best friend were very likeable characters, and there was definitely development with others, turning them from disliked to liked. I think if you like reading YA, and enjoy cooking as a prominent aspect, you’ll enjoy this. Reading about these different foods and reading her passion for the art of cooking was inspiring and also made me hungry! Overall, I do think this lived up to the hype, and I really enjoyed it and recommend it.
